Persian Dinner at Kebab Depot

After visiting the wake of a friend's mom who died recently, the hubby and I along with our friend Vanessa had a nice dinner of Persian food at Kebab Depot located inside Greenhills Town Center (GTC). Coming from Sta. Mesa, you just turn right to Gilmore Ave. and drive straight until you see the signage of GTC.

Kebab Depot serves good Persian food! I had no idea until I tasted them. Our orders consisted of the following Persian favorites: hummus with pita bread, shawarma (also in pita bread), sizzling shawarma (which the hubby ate with plain rice), and beef korma with beryani rice (this one's spicy!).

While my two companions had fresh dalandan juice, I went for the perfect drink, yogurt shake.

Vanessa liked her hummus which was lightly-seasoned but still very flavorful.

The same goes for her shawarma in pita bread. I remember she was raving how the beef was tender and had a corned beef-like texture. I couldn't agree more. The beef was fork-tender and very tasty! Actually, the hubby and I ended up ordering one pita bread each so we could finish off the remaining sizzling shawarma.

Now, the difference between the shawarma and the sizzling shawarma is the presence of an egg. The latter had it which the hubby happily mixed with the rest of the beef dish. Speaking of the sizzling shawarma, I think it's so sulit at P140! No doubt that with the generous serving, it could easily feed four people by ordering four pita bread to go with it. Yeah, I just thought about it now! Haha.

My beef korma, on the other hand, was a delight in its own right. It was very delicious, I could eat it again and again. The beef was also fork-tender and there was a burst of flavors in every bite. The beryani rice was a little bit soggy and oily but I didn't care because it was yummy as well. Next time, though, I'll try their basmati rice for the long grain effect and minus the spice.

Kebab Depot is a dainty restaurant with cozy interiors and sharing space with its sister company Salsa Verde. If I'm not mistaken, they have the same owner. You could order food from both restaurants wherever you're sitting at. Cool, ayt?

The food at Kebab Depot are definitely top-notch. During our visit, everything tasted fresh and good. I appreciated the fact that the servers were friendly and all our orders were served hot off the kitchen. It sure made our dining experience there more enjoyable and satisfying. We are definitely going back to Kebab Depot for our Persian food fix! :)

Charlie's Grind and Grill at Ronac Art Center, San Juan

A dinner out with my hubby's friends one Thursday night took me to a new and emerging foodie haven called Charlie's Grind and Grill. No, it's not the one at Kapitolyo, Pasig but rather, in the cool Ronac Art Center in San Juan. A new branch, I guess. If my calculation is right, it's more or less than 500 meters from Greenhills Shopping Center.

What I love most about Charlie's is that it serves my fave buffalo wings! They also have pasta, burgers, fries and imported beers. All these food make for a fun dining experience, methinks. Anyhow, we made sure to order a couple of items and shared everything. We were six adults and one child but still, we ended up with some leftovers which we gladly took home.

We had two dozens of Buffalo Chicken Wings (P335 per dozen). To have some variety, one dozen was sweet and the other was hot. They came with veggie sticks and a small container of blue cheese dip. Between the two flavors, I liked the sweet one better. I dunno, but Charlie's hot buffalo wings didn't appeal to me that much, which is contrary to what a lot of people say about their wings. It had the heat, the saltiness and the sourness, but maybe I was looking for more oomph factor.

say hot!

The Black Angus Burger (P195) which I personally chosen was okay and I thought it was worth the price. It had cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mustard and mayo. The beef was tasty and tender but was a bit on the dry side.

We also had two orders of Meatballs Marinara on Pasta (P280 per order). I loved the sweet-salty flavors of the tomato-based sauce! Each order had four big meatballs, definitely good for sharing. I could tell the meatballs were made of 100% pure beef but sadly, they were too bland for my liking. I hope they add more salt next time.

For sidings, we got Chili and Cheese Fries (P120) and Nacho Fries (P150). I'm not so sure if I got the names and the prices right but they were both 100% hand cut fries. While one had cheese sauce, the other had a some kinda salsa of ground beef, onions and tomatoes. You can never go wrong with fries, especially if they look so real with skin on, so you could say I liked them.

To give a sweet ending to our meal, we had one of their desserts. I didn't get the name and price but it was basically a chocolate cake drizzled with caramel sauce. I liked it a lot because the cake was moist and not too sweet.

Our drinks, on the other hand, consisted of soda and San Mig light. We also tried one of the imported beers displayed in one of the refs which had a nice, light taste.

The ambience at Charlie's is quite relaxed. There were a lot of people when we dined, mostly basketball players (some famous, some not) and their friends. I heard there's a basketball court at the second floor so that explains it. If you're not used to having a lot of people around (good thing they have ample parking spaces there!), you can always opt to go for take-out. By the way, the resto's open from 9am until midnight. :)

Le Ching Tea House at Shoppesville Arcade, Greenhills

Right after the blogger launch of Globe UnliMail at Blue Water Day Spa-Ortigas Branch, Edwin and I headed to the nearby Greenhills Shopping Complex for dinner. Though we already had sandwiches in the event, I was craving for some noodle soup so off we entered Le Ching Tea House at the basement of Shoppesville Arcade. With just a few minutes away from closing time, the restaurant still had several of its tables occupied.

Hakao, P80. This shrimp dimsum was delicious but I found the wrap over-steamed. This was four pieces per order, not bad since each hakao had a whole medium-sized shrimp that tasted fresh. Oh and, have I mentioned that their chili sauce was the best? It had the right kick that awakens the taste buds and bites the tongue, if you know what I mean.

Chicken with Mushroom Rice, P115. This is one of the topped rice on the menu. It was like Singapore's national dish 'chicken rice' minus the flavor and double the fat. The chicken pieces on this dish were more on the bony and fatty side that I thought I only got 10% lean meat. I found it bland, taste wise. I didn't like it and I won't order this again. But in fairness to this dish, the rice was sticky and fragrant which was very good to eat with dimsum. Perhaps, I'll order the Spare Ribs Rice next time which most people rave about. Well, that's if I haven't eliminated pork in my diet yet.

Beef Brisket Noodle Soup, P112. This is the winner among the food items we ordered! The soup was flavorful and the beef was tender. It also came in a big bowl that was good for two people which I thought made it worth its price.

For drinks, we got some iced tea that sells for P35 per glass. I found it amusing that they use ordinary straw for this drink. It looked weird since the glass was small and the straw was long (see photo below). Actually, I ordered bottled water and not iced tea but these were what the waiter served us. He, by the way, was not so friendly with us and looked tired, must be because they were about to close the resto already. It was not a big deal for us, though.

Edwin and I shared everything and we thought we had value for money as the prices at Le Ching are competitive.

Ambiance at Le Ching-Greenhills is more like canteen style with its low-rise tables and desk-type benches. I guess they chose this kind of setup for easy turnover of diners since it is located in a busy shopping complex.

Have you tried Le Ching? What are your favorite dishes there?
