Marty's Cracklin', The Best Vegetarian Chicharon Comes from Oishi

Cracklings or "chicharon" is a favorite among Pinoys the world over. It's pork or chicken skin (meat are included in some varieties!) deep fried in a bat of oil. But despite its distinctive umami taste and addicting pork/chicken goodness, it can be deadly when eaten in large proportions as pork/chicken skin is loaded with bad cholesterol. I am trying to eat healthy this year so I am on a constant look out for healthy food options. It was a sweet surprise for me to find the best "vegetarian chicharon" in Marty's Cracklin' which is being manufactured by none other than the fast-growing chip maker Oishi.


Marty's Cracklin' is vegetarian chicharon made from dehydrated green peas, tapioca starch and dehydrated potatoes. It tastes and looks exactly like your favorite chicharon, minus the bad cholesterol. They are available in 90g and 20g packs. There are two flavors to choose from: the plain salted and the salt and vinegar. I like both.


For those on a strict diet or suffering from a serious health condition, be informed that each serving (approx. 20 g) of Marty's Cracklin' has 100 calories and fills 5 percent of our daily sodium requirements.

Marty's Cracklin' is available at all SM supermakets and groceries nationwide. I bet price is cheapest at SM Hypermarket in Mall of Asia, P15 for the 90g pack and P3.75 for the 20g pack. At the SM Supermarket in SM Manila where I bought my first pack, the 90g pack costs P17.50 and the 20g pack costs P4.95.

Now I can eat all the chicharon I want without the guilt. Actually, I've been promoting Marty's Cracklin' to my friends since the day I tasted it. Thanks to Oishi for producing this very innovative food product. Two thumbs up!

Buffet Alert: Eat All You Can Sushi at Sakae Sushi, Mall of Asia

7-Eleven's 1st Big Bite Hotdog Eating Challenge, Promo Details and Contest Mechanics

Philippine Seven Corporation, the company that manages the 7-Eleven convenience store chain in the Philippines, has officially launched the 1st Big Bite Hotdog Eating Challenge yesterday at Rockwell Tent, Makati. It was attended by the local press and members of the online media (mostly bloggers). Primarily, the event sought to introduce competitive eating to Filipinos in the hope that soon, we'll be able to join the ranks of the world's greatest competitive eaters.


Any Filipinos, regardless of age and gender, can join the 1st Big Bite Hotdog Eating Challenge. The qualifying round runs from June 26 to August 15, 2009. The grand finals will be held at the Trinoma Mall Activity Center on August 29, 2009. Below are the prizes:

1st Place: P 500,000
2nd Place: P 150,000
3rd Place: P 75,000
Consolation: P 20,000

Competitive eating is now a sport recognized all over the world, particularly in the United States and Canada. Tom "Goose" Gilbert, world-renowned competitive eater, wowed the audience during the launch when he finished 10 hotdog sandwiches in 3 minutes and 14 seconds.

Certainly, competitive eating requires great amount of strength, appetite and will power. To become a competitive eater or gurgitator, one should undergo training and employ various eating techniques. If you think you can eat fast and have the guts and the determination to succeed, this challenge may just be for you.

McDonald's Twister Fries is Back!

McDonald's twister fries is back. I got to sample a serving of it last Sunday at McDonald's Mendiola Branch after hearing mass with the Techo family at St. Jude Shrine. What can I say? Taste wise, McDonald's twister fries still has the same intense potato flavors. I noticed though that the twister fries shrunk a bit and the texture isn't that full anymore.


You can get McDonald's twister fries at any McDonald's stores. It could be ordered solo or as part of a combo meal. Partner is a McFloat in an Ice Age 3-designed cup. Add P25 for value meals to change your regular fries to a McDonald's twister fries.

Apparently, the return of McDonald's twister fries is for a limited time only, sort of a marketing gimmick to complement the release of the animated movie Ice Age 3 in the Philippines.

Super New Dishes from Super Bowl of China Premiers Today

Super Bowl of China has four new sumptuous dishes to offer their growing clientele starting today, July 1. Bloggers (myself included!) got the chance to sample these creations, which were prepared lovingly by the restaurant's executive chef in the person of Chef Roy, yesterday at the Super Bowl of China-Mall of Asia Branch. It was also during this time that they launched their two foodie masscots, Super Happi and Super Lucky.


The four super new dishes from Super Bowl of China are aptly named as follows: Golden Weave Cut US Frozen Potato with Minced Pork (P150), Beef Fillet Chinese Style (P260), Crispy Fish Fillet with Lemon and Plum Sauce (P250) and Hot and Spicy Chicken(Php250).


Note that all these dishes are flavorful and affordable, too. In less than P300, you get a complete dish that's good for sharing. Among them, I liked the chicken dish the most. The peppery taste from the whole, dried chili peppers, suited my palate better than the crispy fish fillet, the other hot dish in the selection.

To make things even more exciting, Super Bowl of China has recently partnered with the US Potato Board to incorporate US potatoes in their menu. This is best represented in one of the four super new dishes they launched, the Golden Weave Cut US Frozen Potato with Minced Pork. You'll surely love the rich potato flavor of this dish. The pork is very tender, too. I think it's a complete meal in itself (carbo + protein).
