It was my first time to dine at a family grill whose ambience was homey and relaxing and whose tuna specialties were so good they were worth raving about to your family and friends. I'm talking about Joseph & Jaemark’s Family Grill situated a stone's throw away from the GMA Network compound in Quezon City. Last Thursday, I got invited to a blogger food tasting hosted by the said restaurant and I was glad I didn't let the opportunity pass up.
Joseph & Jaemark’s Family Grill had its humble beginnings in a small place beside Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City. Initially offering barbecued and grilled fares, Mars Reyes eventually started serving tuna in 1993. Their tuna dishes were so yummy that soon enough, their patrons included not only police officers, professional athletes and movie stars but also popular foodies like the late Doreen Fernandez, Sandy Daza and Lori Baltazar.

From Cuneta Astrodome, Joseph & Jaemark’s transferred in several spots (Katipunan Avenue, Makati, C-5 Taguig, and Magallanes) along with their loyal tuna fans before resting for a while and reopening again. This time, they found the perfect place on Sgt. Esguerra Avenue, Quezon City. They still have the dishes that made them famous: crispy buntot (crispy tuna tail), panga (tuna jaw), and tiyan (tuna belly). Of course, not to be missed is the highlight of these tuna creations: the secret sauce – which consists of soy sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, and margarine. For those craving for other meat dishes, there are the Crispy Pata, Bicol Express, Kare-Kare, and Pork Sisig to satisfy your taste buds.

Here are some of the food served to us:
the star of the night
Their specialty 'buntot ng tuna' (tuna tail) was a winner. It was my first time to try such a dish and I greatly enjoyed it. It was grilled to perfection and yet, you could still taste the succulent freshness of the tuna. No wonder this is exactly what people go back for at Joseph & Jaemark's.
make your 'buntot ng tuna' experience complete with these two different special dips
Another noteworthy dish was the stuffed pechay. Basically, this is pechay leaves stuffed with smoked tuna bits in a little spicy coco milk-infused sauce that's perfect with white rice. I could eat it everyday. It was that good.
This catfish salad was divine. The clean, sweet taste of mango and the sourness of the vinegar complemented the crunchy catfish shreds. We had it as appetizer and it surely whet our appetite and readied us for more good food that would come that night.
Then we also had other dishes like prawns stewed in coco milk and meat, tuna belly (another grilled winner!) spare ribs, Bicol Express and more. Everything served to us was rich and tasty. Beware of your rice intake because all their dishes are rich and savory they will make you eat more rice than you would eat on normal days.
prawn stewed in coco milk and meat
pork spareribs in sweet, sticky sauce...yum!
their Bicol Express has more types of vegetable than usual
this tuna belly was a hit among the bloggers, too!
these pork balls look yummy inside and out (but it was not on the menu yet!)
Wow, I couldn't believe I sampled all those glorious dishes that night. Good thing they served us with a very refreshing dessert --- coffee jelly topped with lychee.
Somehow, this sweet surprise made me feel a bit lighter after eating all those food. Like the pork balls, it was not yet included in the menu though.
I noticed that the food servings at Joseph & Jaemark's were good enough for their prices. The staff were attentive, too. They also had a really nice al fresco dining area at the back which I thought was ideal for beer-drinking sessions with friends. According to the owners who graced us with their presence on the latter part of our dinner, they have band performances on some nights.
