Happy 1st Anniversary to King Chef Seafood Restaurant, Lucky Chinatown Mall!

Last Saturday, I, along with my Superf Nicely, attended the first anniversary of King Chef Seafood Restaurant at Lucky Chinatown Mall in Binondo. It was well-attended by members of the media, bloggers, investors, suppliers and friends of the famous Chinese restaurant. The guests were treated to a sumptuous lauriat lunch composed of King Chef specialty dishes. Everything we ate was delicious and as we had expected, the feast they served us was fit for a king. Now, that's the King Chef promise that they deliver to their customers every single day.

While the lauriat lunch was being served, there was a program that featured some slideshows and speeches from the people behind King Chef as well as parlor games where the lucky winners received King Chef GCs. Everybody, including yours truly, went home with a happy tummy and of course, wishing King Chef - Lucky Chinatown branch more fruitful years in the competitive dining scene of Binondo.

Below are food photos from the lauriat lunch we had:

King Chef first opened in Banawe, QC on June 30, 2011. It's the baby of the Ang couple -- Michael and Maritess. Today, King Chef already has three branches: two in Banawe (King Chef Fine Dining and King Chef Dimsum Kitchen) and one in Binondo (King Chef-Lucky Chinatown Mall). It's amazing how in just a span of two years, King Chef has already made a name for itself and gained a loyal following among Filipino-Chinese families and Chinese-food lovers alike.

Dinner at Hawaii's North Shore

Last November 17 which was a Thursday, I was at UP-Ayala Techno Hub for a dinner with the Open Rice Philippines Team. It’s my second time to attend their “Eat’s a Date” activity where they treat Open Ricers and food bloggers to a sumptuous dinner to introduce a particular restaurant and to just have a bonding time with us. This time, we tried the food at Hawaii's North Shore. Our dinner consisted of their signature burgers and steaks which are the stars of the restaurant’s very simple and straightforward menu.

I got caught in the traffic and so I arrived in the restaurant during the latter part of the dinner. I didn’t get to taste the burgers but I did have a great time finishing the various steaks served to us. If I’m not mistaken, I ate three different steaks in one night. How lucky could I get?

My fave among the three would be the Strip Steak because it was succulent and well-seasoned. It also had the right balance of meat and fat I wanted. Simply delicious.

The other two were good as well. They had the right marbling and the meat was fork-tender.

The best thing about the steaks is that their prices were quite affordable considering they were imported beef. Nice.

By the way, I also got a taste of the Caesar salad and it was light and refreshing.

Hawaii's North Shore is one themed restaurant that serves good food at mid-range prices. The ambience is cozy and relaxing. When you're here, it's like you're on a beach, what with all the surfboards and other beach essentials adorning the place. The beach wear-donning wait staff completes the beach vibe and adds a festive mood to the restaurant, too. It helped that they were friendly and attentive, too, during our visit.

Promoting Cavite Tourism Thru a Food Revolution

Aside from our OFWs, tourism is one of the driving forces that keeps the Philippine economy afloat. Surely, there is so much to see and do in our 7,107 islands but let's face the truth, tourist distribution in our country remains unequal. While some provinces bask in the great volume of tourists that flock their must-see destinations, there are those that are just left behind. Take for instance the province of Cavite. Despite its many offerings and fair share of sights, activities and culinary treats, Cavite remains less attractive to tourists than Cebu, Bohol or even Davao. Good thing the forerunners of Cavite tourism has thought of a strategy to attract tourists to their territories. That is, through a food revolution (pun intended). (We all know how Cavite led the revolution against Spain at one point in our rich Philippine history.) They would like the world to know about the uniqueness and great taste of Cavite food. And what could be a better venue to announce this than a tourism seminar cum food tasting! I'm glad to have been part of this event along with several foodie bloggers.

The event was hosted by Republic of Cavite, a homey, history-rich restaurant situated in Trece Martires City. Below are some of the Cavite dishes we had the pleasure of tasting:

STARTERS

Cavite Kinilaw

cav10

MAIN DISHES

cav5
Binagoongang Baboy

cav3
Grilled Chicken Sinampalukan

cav14

cav2
Kare-Kare

cav9
everyone's favorite Crispy Pata

cav7
Adobong Caviteño (my favorite among the main dishes!)

cav8
Crispy Dinuguan

cav12

the province's very own Cavite Express

DESSERTS

cav6
the famous Lihim ni Lola

cav15
Piniritong Halo-halo

cav13
Onde Onde

Honestly, I liked everything and would have eaten more had my tummy allowed me. But no, I could only eat so much that time. I was particularly blown away by the Adobong Caviteño. The addition of pork liver, quiail eggs and whole peanuts made the dish more interesting and delectable. It was my most fave dish from the buffet.

cav17
this Lechon Sinigang Soup was unique and yummy!

Before we had a delightful, gastronomic adventure, we were first seen participating in a tourism seminar. Talks were given by three respectable Cavite tourism movers namely: Mr. Jaime Tepora (President, Cavite Travel and Tours), Ms. Teresita Leabres (Chairman, Cavite Small and Medium Enterprises Development Council) and Ms. Cathy Lee Cachila Tolentino (General Manager, Caylabne Bay Resort). There were also raffle draws, a cooking demo and a dance number from the Cavite State University to sustain the interest of the participants. After the program, there was a tour of the place (my second time) where we took lots of photos for cam-whoring documentation purposes. All in all, it was a fun and knowledge-filled event.

For more of Republic of Cavite, you may wanna check out my Republic of Cavite review and some Republic of Cavite photos I have blogged before.

If you have never set foot in any of Cavite's tourist attractions, you better plan a visit now. There's so much to see and do and eat in Cavite, I can assure you that it's gonna be a worthwhile experience. Plus, in doing so, you'll be able to help in Cavite's campaign to promote tourism in the entire province. Or better yet, help spread the word about Cavite to your family, friends and community.

Thank you very much to Republic of Cavite and to my friend Ron Leyba for the invite. :)

Seattle’s Best Coffee Bloggers Event

Last Saturday at Seattle’s Best Coffee-Greenbelt 3, I joined in a morning of fresh conversations with my fellow food bloggers over great coffee and even greater brunch fares. We just hanged out there for a few hours like we owned the place. To think that it was a holiday being Bonifacio Day, everyone was in a bright mood. The ambiance at Seattle Best was very relaxing. I love the framed photos on the wall featuring scenes of daily life in Seattle, U.S.A. Times like this are always fun.

Aside from the generous servings of gourmet food and coffee concoctions (I had the Double Chocolate Mint ice-blended coffee and the big breakfast of pancakes, wheat bread, three small sausages, slices of bacon and two sunny-side up eggs), the bloggers event was graced by one of the Top 10 Seattle Best Customers, international publicist Joyce Ramirez. We got to chat and take our photos with her. Cool, ayt?

Sample the Best of Cavite Cuisine (and History) at Republic of Cavite

The food tasting event for bloggers held at Republic of Cavite last Saturday afternoon was an experience rich in history and gastronomic pleasures. You really can't go wrong with a restaurant that celebrates Cavite cuisine and history in a modern yet homey setting.

Photobucket

Below are the dishes I sampled from the buffet and my foodie notes about them:

Photobucket

Ginataang Tulingan. I'm a big fan of the fish tulingan especially when it's cooked in gata (coconut cream). This dish was so rich I almost choked on the bones because I accidentally ate it together with the flesh of the fish. Poor me. It reminded me of my mom's home-cooking that never fails.

Photobucket

Chicken Magnifique. This tasted like cordon bleau minus the cheese and the bacon. It also had a creamy sauce. I found the chicken skin and fat here too much, though. For those who are watching their cholesterol intake, this should be eaten in moderation.

Photobucket

Fish and Tofu. I think this is the healthiest from the batch. I like the simplicity and lightness of this dish. If you're on a diet, this is a good choice.

Photobucket

Pastel de Lengua. This ox tongue dish is rich and creamy. The flavors are pleasing to the mouth. It tasted fresh, without any hint of "anggo" if you know what I mean by that. I would've paired it with steamed, plain rice but the only ones available that time were Thai rice and basil rice. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. I liked it that the lengua was sliced into bite size pieces. I believe that the smaller the food, the better to chew and appreciate it.

Photobucket

Adobo Caviteño
. Not your ordinary adobo as it's very rich and tasty. I loved the inclusion of quail eggs in this dish as it made the adobo looked more palatable.

Photobucket

Kinulot na Page. This was a bit salty for my taste but I ended up finishing three spoonfuls. The page (stingray) was so fresh and made tastier by the gata (coconut cream). I paired it with the basil rice to neutralize the saltiness and it was a perfect combination!

Maja Blanca. I've no photo of it but what I remember is that it was shaped exactly like a fancy puto. It was not in a bilao which is how it's normally served. It had the same great taste of the native rice cake.

Photobucket

Lihim ni Lola. This reminds me of puto bumbong. As the name suggests, it has a delicious secret. You may see the "secret" here but to taste it, you'll have to go all the way to Republic of Cavite in Trece Martirez City.

Photobucket

Just go figure what's inside this yummy rice cake. Here's an assurance that you'll never regret going to Cavite to try this: 'twas so good I ate five pieces in one sitting! Sssshhh.

Photobucket

Onde Onde. This puto rolled in a bed of dessicated cocounut was chewy and I was surprised to know that it has a sweet sauce inside that tasted like panucha. A very sweet surprise, indeed.

Photobucket

Fancy Puto. This is not your typical puto. It has slices of salted egg and cheese on top and small pieces of savory meat inside that tasted like the asado found in a siopao.

The dishes we tasted were accompanied by glasses and glasses of ginger iced tea. There was no better drink for that afternoon's buffet than it. It was refreshing and healthy. Edwin and I enjoyed it so much.

Photobucket

Before we left, Republic of Cavite granted us a sip of their freshly-brewed Amadeo coffee. Sorry the photo I have won't justify it because I already added milk in it before taking the shot. All I can say is, the coffee was perfect.
