Buffet Dinner with Cultural Presentation at Barbara's Restaurant, Intramuros

Whenever I dine in a restaurant, my top preference is always the buffet. Aside from the fact that buffets allow me to eat to my heart's content with its eat-all-you-can policy, they never fail to give full value to my money. As a paying customer, that's what I look for at all times. I don't care if I spend more than what I would usually pay for a meal, so long as it's buffet with wide food selection, I'm in.

barb1

The emergence of Groupon sites has allowed me to spend more on food through their awesome restaurant deals. Last Friday night, for instance, we have finally used our Metrodeal vouchers at Barbara's Restaurant, a fine dining vintage restaurant in Intramuros.

While the food and the wait staff service at Barbara's during our visit were pretty good, I found their reservation service a bit bad. I booked for a table for three the week before and when we asked for it, my name wasn't on their list for the night. How come it wasn't there?

I even called three times on different days just to get a table. During my first and second calls, the reservation officer said they're already fully booked on the dates I chose (within the week). On my third and final call, I was able to get a table because I chose a date that fell not within the week but on the next week. I was really upset but didn't show it. The guy on the reception table was kind enough to still accommodate us (okay, maybe the disappointment did show on my face).

Initially, we were ushered to the adjacent empty room. The other room was where the buffet spread, cultural presentation and diners were. My two companions (Edwin and his sister Albie) were just looking on and following me. So, we went to the other room to get food and for some reason, I overheard the guy at the reception table explaining about our situation to another guy that looked like restaurant manager to me. I made parinig that how come nobody enlisted my name as part of the diners for the night, blah blah blah. Funny but somehow, it was effective because seconds after we got our share from the buffet, we were led to the nearby table for three within that room. That, or maybe they just transferred us because the supposed diners for the said table for three were not arriving in the next one hour and we didn't look like we'd stay for more than an hour. Whatever the reason was, I was glad we got seated in that room.

barb4
a peek into the cultural presentation (behind us)

Personally, I liked the food at Barbara's. There were only a few dishes on the buffet and these were all Filipino food. I particularly enjoyed their lechon kawali. I think I had two servings of it. It was well-seasoned and had just the right oiliness. The pork skin was crispy and the meat was tender. I paired this with the mango, tomato and bagoong (shrimp paste) salad. Yum.

barb2

Another dish I liked is the soy sauce-based fish fillet (looked like taningue to me) whose meat was super tender and tasty.

Aside from the two dishes I mentioned, there were also pancit and kare-kare. I skipped on the pancit because it didn't look delicious to me. I tried the kare-kare but I only got some veggies and sauce because I was not a big fan of it.

barb3

Drinks are not included in our vouchers. We had to drink or run the risk of choking. So, I got fresh guyabano juice. It's not on the menu but just a suggestion from one of the waiters. P120 for a glass. It was sweet and refreshing but had a bitter aftertaste. I guess some guyabano peel got mixed in while they were scraping off the fruit's flesh. But I still liked it as it was.

photo

For desserts, Barbara's served three kinds. There were the banana fritters with sesame seeds that Edwin liked a lot, the merengue that Albie was raving about and the sago cups which Albie and I both enjoyed.

The entire restaurant complex of Barbara's is huge. They have function rooms for special occasions. The room where we got seated was on the second floor. It was big and looked really vintage with its wooden, Spanish style interiors. Despite the presence of the diners around, I still found the place spooky, though. It didn't help that the minimal lighting was concentrated on the buffet side and the tables were lighted by candles only. Taking good food pictures was next to impossible. We even forgot to bring a camera so pardon the lousy photos taken using an iPhone 4. Haha.

We got our Metrodeal vouchers at P250 each, original value was P500. Not bad for a buffet dinner with one-hour cultural presentation from a certain Folklorica dance group. Had my reservation went thru smoothly and my name been included in the list of diners for the night, our experience would have been more fun and memorable.

Spiral Buffet Dinner at Sofitel, Pasay City

Thanks to groupon sites like Ensogo Philippines, great deals are just a mouse click away. Last Friday, we were finally able to use our Ensogo vouchers for a buffet dinner with one glass of wine at Spiral, Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. Originally P3,150, we got the vouchers for just P1,575 each. That gave us 50% savings! And to think it was the Spiral buffet, I was quite sure we'd get full value for our money. And we did! The buffet we had was a delight to the senses, what with the outstanding display of international cuisines for everyone to appreciate and enjoy.

Edwin, Albie and I arrived at Sofitel, Pasay City a few minutes before our reservation time of 7:00 p.m. As soon as we entered the well-maintained buffet area, we were greeted by a host of hotel personnel. We were immediately ushered to our table which was a few baby steps away from the Chinese food station. It was followed by the pouring of the complimentary wine to our glasses. And then we joined the big crowd and started helping ourselves with the wide selection of food.

Buffets always give me a hard time. I just can't decide fast when it comes to what I should try first. Anyway, proximity won as my first plate was Chinese food (it was the nearest to our table, remember?).

And then I tried the other cuisines, just little servings as I wanted to appreciate each food and didn't wanna get full fast. I think I saw over 300 dishes from five or more cuisines on display. Aside from the Chinese food, I spotted Italian and Spanish favorites, Japanese items, Filipino and Indian specialties, grilled meat and seafood and a lot more. Haaaay, just thinking about all those food now makes my mouth water!

I know it's biased to say that I liked everything I ate, so I'll just mention some personal favorites. I enjoyed my noodle soup a lot and I couldn't get enough of the bacon-wrapped enoki mushrooms grilled to perfection. I also loved the Indian flat bread and the Italian pizza and potato salad. These are the must-haves at Spiral, take that from me.

spi8
these bacon-wrapped enoki mushrooms were a winner! make sure to try this one at Spiral!

When the time for desserts came, I got too tempted to try everything (from cakes to pastries). Good thing I was so in control of myself that time, I managed to get only a small plate that had mmostly fresh fruits plus a small serving of blueberry cheesecake and the pièce de résistance creme brulee. My finale was a scoop of strawberry Italian gelato which I mixed with lots of different nuts (pistacchio, almonds, walnuts, etc.) I would have gotten a scoop of my fave pistacchio ice cream as well but they didn't have that. :(

Sofitel was such a posh and lovely place. It helped that there was a big crowd to keep the festive spirit alive. The dim lighting on the tables was not so food photography-friendly, though.

Aside from the fantastic hotel buffet experience, we were also able to explore the back part of the hotel facing the Manila Bay. That area was just so romantic! Swimming pools, tables and chairs, beach hammocks and beautiful Cebu furniture were available for hotel guests to use. I saw couples and groups having a good time by the sea and under the stars. We couldn't help but take some photos of the people hanging around ourselves and the beautiful view.

As for the hotel service while we were enjoying the buffet, I give them an A for effort. The staff were attentive and friendly. They moved fast but looked composed despite the busyness of the night. I have to give it to them for showing the warmth and hospitality of the Filipino people to the world (there were foreign tourists everywhere I looked!). Haha.

I hope to treat my entire family to a Spiral buffet experience in the future.

Ocean's Surf Buffet at Marriot Hotel: A Seafood Feast for All

I'm not one to eat at cafes inside hotels on a regular basis but whenever I do, I make sure it's gonna be something worth remembering and raving about to friends. Aside from the beautiful and well-designed interiors, what attract me to posh hotels are their buffets. I'm frugal, you know. Buffets allow people like me to enjoy as much dishes as I want without the guilt. But unlike the rich, I eat at buffets only during special occasions (like when Edwin and I had a satisfying Century Park Hotel dinner buffet on our 5th anniversary) and when getting invites from friends. The latter was the case last Friday when Marriott Hotel Manila invited food bloggers to sample their Ocean Surf's Seafood Buffet at their in-house restaurant, Marriott Cafe. It was a night of pure gastronomic pleasure and good company. The food alone made me glad I came.

I couldn't believe I ate a lot that night. As in I made it to Round 7. Haha. But then, isn't that what buffets want us to do? Indulge in food and so indulge I did.

162993_483181564929_768274929_5963451_569525_n
I started off my dinner with this bowl of steaming hot chicken noodle soup whose ingredients I personally chose. I got it from the Chinese food station. I liked how the bitter-sweet taste of the roasted onions complemented the flavors of the togue, century egg, shrimps, chicken, beef and garlic. The soup was delicious, too.

164150_483181599929_768274929_5963452_4442977_n
Next was this serving of ravioli in pesto sauce. It was a bit on the salty side and it must have been because of the pesto sauce. But the ravioli in itself was good, with just the right cream and gooeyness from the ravioli.

163741_483181749929_768274929_5963458_3359364_n
I'm not a big fan of seafood but I just have to try 'em all. They are the highlight of the night, after all. So I got this plate and filled it with a little bit of everything. I had the kitchen staff heat it and when it was done, I ate with gusto. Everything was fresh, juicy and sweet. Just the way I liked my seafood to be.

164031_483181709929_768274929_5963457_4642547_n
For my fourth plate, ehem, I got some pizza, steak, fish finger, baked mussels and buttered veggies. The thin crust seafood pizza was satisfyingly good. I had to fight myself against getting another slice. The steak, on the other hand, was tender and juicy. The special dip for the fish finger (which happened to be from a huge lapu-lapu as you can see on one of the photos above) was addicting.

164760_483181764929_768274929_5963459_5110434_n
This was to appease a part of my stomach that longed to eat Japanese and Chinese food. Just your regular tempura and maki; the siomais were flavorful. I like all siomais because I'm a siomai lover. Haha.

164141_483181799929_768274929_5963460_6942927_n
This is my personal dessert platter. But I shared some with Superfriend Nice lest I'd get diabetes. The cheesecake was superb, not too sweet and with just the right amount of cream cheese. The carrot cake was good, too. I liked that it was nutty and gooey. While my other blogger friends had fun dipping their fruits in the chocolate fountain, I preferred mine as is.

164506_483181819929_768274929_5963461_7299810_n
I capped off my meal that night with three delicious scoops of Italian gelato in three different flavors namely Palawan Walnut Honey, Maracaibo Chocolate and Mixed Berries. I especially like the chocolate one, the Mascar- thing, because of its rich native chocolate flavor. It's like they sourced it straight from the Aztecs of South America. Yum.

163601_483181534929_768274929_5963450_4288107_n
Special mention to the blue lemonade we had for drinks. It was unique and refreshing. When availing of this buffet, you should order it to better appreciate all the glorious food you're about to feast on.

our group

We went on a Friday and as expected, people started coming in later that night. The diners are a mixed crowd composed of couples, barkadas, families and some foreigners who looked like hotel guests to me.

The verdict? A big thumb's up! The seafood buffet at Marriott Cafe was indeed a feast to the senses. The wide selection of food (aside from seafood) makes it worth the seemingly high price tag. As they say, quantity meets quality.

Special thanks to Marriot Hotel Manila, Marriott Cafe, Savannah Santiago and my blogger friend  Alex Dizon for this awesome blogger treat. :)

Dinner Buffet at Guilly's Island, Boracay

Guilly's Island is one of the beachfront restaurants at Station 1, Boracay that serves buffet nightly. Compared to other buffets lining the long stretch of White Beach, theirs was one of the lowest-priced. For only P275, you get to sample Filipino, Japanese and Italian dishes as well as the requisite seafood, soup, salad and dessert items. It also has a separate station where you can freely choose the ingredients and toppings for your Mongolian rice bowl. While there are restaurants in Boracay that serve Mongolian buffets only, this particular Mongolian station is just part of the buffet at Guilly's. Now that's what you call value for money!

IMG_2246

We arrived at the spacious dining place of Guilly's at around 7:00 p.m. It was a Monday which was also the last night of our birthday trip to Boracay. There were only a few diners that time and so the buffet was still generously filled. After getting a table, Edwin and I immediately went to the buffet station. I headed for the Mongolian station and filled my bowl with warm rice and noodles and the freshest meat, veggies, sauces and spices. I left it with the staff who would cook it for me. I was given a number and told to wait for my Mongolian rice bowl on our table.

While waiting for my Mongolian rice bowl, I took photos of the different food on the buffet and also had a plate of carbonara pasta cooked for me. Edwin, on the other hand, got his share of the Pinoy food and a small plate of Japanese maki. We met at our table and soon after, my Mongolian rice bowl and carbonara pasta had arrived. We ate as slowly as possible to allow ourselves to appreciate the tastes and flavors of our food.

IMG_2266

IMG_2264

My Mongolian rice bowl looked rich and delicious. No, it actually looked and tasted rich and delicious. One of the best Mongolian rice bowls I've tried. The three kinds of meat I got (chicken, beef and squid) were fresh and juicy. The same can also be said about the veggies. I also gave some credit to myself because I was the one who chose the right amount of ingredients and toppings that went into it. Haha.

IMG_2262
my Mongolian rice bowl (cooked)

On the other hand, I found my carbonara pasta dry and bland. The white sauce (bechamel) tasted weird and the meat was scarce. I thought the only thing that gave it a bit of saltiness was the parmesan cheese. I didn't like it, to be honest. It was actually Edwin who finished my plate.

I cannot tell how the Filipino dishes tasted like but if we would base it from Edwin's empty plate after our dinner, then I could say they're good.

This soup of sinigang na tuna sa miso was very comforting. Its marriage of salty and sour flavors was perfect for our taste buds. Edwin even happily commented that it was his kind of fish sinigang. I'm not a soup person but when Edwin gave me a small bowl of this, I was able to finish it in no time.

soup

As for these Japanese makis and calamares, they were also delicious but I was already too full with my Mongolian rice bowl to appreciate them fully. But I wasn't able to say no to the oysters as they were refreshing, a real seafood treat! Edwin and I got so stuffed that we opted not to try the salad and the desserts anymore.

IMG_2258

IMG_2259
fresh oysters are love

The P275 per head dinner buffet at Guilly's Island comes with a complimentary glass of ordinary iced tea. Oooops, and one thing that sets them apart from other buffets in Boracay is that they don't have a "no leftover" policy. This means you can have as much food as you want without worrying that you'd pay double if ever you leave some on your plate after your meal.

The service at Guilly's Island was okay. Not too friendly but never pushy. That night, the place was half-filled and so I was able to take snapshots without getting the attention of the other diners. I liked it that the restaurant had more than enough tables. It seemed to me that they really catered to a big crowd. In a place like Boracay, I don't think drawing people to your establishment is a problem. The huge restaurant space they have is actually an edge.
