Nanos Pizza House: A Piece of Italy in Manila

Nanos Pizza House or simply Nanos is the “new kid on the block” in the exciting restaurant scene of SM Manila. One random Thursday while strolling around the mall with Edwin, my attention was drawn to this red and green-themed dining place that serves Italian food. Two differently-flavored pizzas were laid out on a table in front of their store for people to see and buy. They were offering pizza to-go to people passing by and it was selling like hotcakes! It must be the sign I was waiting for because before Edwin could say no, I had already dragged him to Nanos to have a quick dinner before going home.

Aside from pizza, Nanos serves pasta, salad and rice meals in a self-service, fast food style. It is sandwiched between Salazar's Bakeshop and Meylin's Noodle House on the Lower Ground Floor of the mall. During our visit, there was a long line at the counter area composed mostly of pizza to-go customers. We didn't waste our time and decided to join the queue to get a piece of Italy in Manila.

Edwin wanted rice and I was not in the mood for some pasta so off we went for their rice meals. He had their Beef Goulash (P99) while I settled for their Meatballs Rice (P79).

Edwin’s Beef Goulash was a plate of rice topped with some tomato-based beef stew. He said it was yummy and the beef was juicy and tender.

I cannot say the same for my Meatballs Rice as the sauce that came with the meatballs was too salty. I had a hard time finishing my rice because the sauce was already mixed with it. As with the two giant meatballs, they were a bit bland for my taste. I could also sense the amount of extender they added to ‘em meatballs was more than what I expected.

We also got a slice of their original Cheese Pizza (P69) just because I was curious of the taste. It was actually big for its price. I thought the taste lacked flavor. While I liked the soft and chewy crust, I found the pizza sauce bland and the mozzarella inadequate.

For drinks, Edwin got a Coke (P35) while I ordered their Banana Shake (P45). I loved my drink. It was lightly sweetened and I could taste the rich and comforting banana flavor in every sip. The serving was big, too. For P45, I thought this was very reasonably priced.

Nanos felt like the more popular Italian restaurant Sbarro to me, except that their food was cheaper, they had more stylish tables and chairs (that looked like world class Cebu furniture!) and their wait staff were more friendly (and most of them spoke Cebuano, too). I wanted to ask the waiter who served my banana shake if the owner was a Cebuano but I got shy. I just asked him if they had other branches. He answered in the negative and explained further that this was their only branch. Nice. I seriously think they have potentials to grow big.

Amazing Cones: Your Pizza in a Cone

I see the store everyday on my way to work. It's relatively new in our area but I noticed it gets a lot of customers every Thursday when devotees flock to St. Jude Shrine to do their novenas. One afternoon, I checked out the store with Edwin and got introduced to yummy pizzas in cones!

Amazing Cones has a different yet unique take on the well-loved Italian fare. Instead of serving round pizza or individual pizza slices, they serve their pizza in a cone. They have this oddly-shaped oven with cone holders where the pizza is cooked within minutes.

The pizza comes in quirky names that the mere reading of them can render you salivating. When we ordered, I got Everything but the Sink and Edwin had the Supremo Italiano. Both belong to the Pizza Cones Special (original size) that are priced at P75. We availed of the current promo and got free glass of iced tea each.

Supremo Italiano has pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, onions, tomato sauce and mozzarella while Everything but the Sink literally has every topping on the list: pepperoni, Italian sausage, beef, mushrooms, pineapple, bell pepper, onions, olives, tomato sauce and mozzarella.

Our amazing cones were both yummy and tasted like real pizza. The mozzarella was queen, standing proudly atop the pizza cone. One thing I liked about the pizza cone was that I tasted the toppings from first to last bite, which meant they were evenly spread inside the cone.

The amazing cones we had were delicious and flavorful, no question about that. My only complaint was the size of the cone. I felt robbed of my money after eating. They were too small for me I didn't even get partially full. I wonder if we ordered the minis priced at P25 instead. I bet it could have been worst. It was just a snack alright but, it could have been more filling. Calling the Amazing Cones owners, I hope you could find a way to make your pizza cones bigger soon.

amazingly delicious, but too small for me

Great Pizza at Mamma Maria's Pizzeria & Ristorante, Lapu-lapu City

Right after Edwin and I landed at Mactan International Airport last Friday, our ever-generous friend Chivs took us on a lunch out at Mactan Town Center in Lapu-lapu City. The three of us wolfed down a medium-sized pizza (8 slices, good for 3-4 persons) and shared two large servings of pasta : carbonara and meatball spaghetti at Mamma Maria's Pizzeria & Ristorante, the home of the biggest pizza in the world (52 inches).

I daresay the pizza at Mamma Maria's Pizzeria is one of the best I've ever tasted. The Opera Pizza we ordered which had tomato sauce, mozarella cheese, ham and tuna was a revelation. I didn't know the combination of tuna and ham could be that delectable. The ham was sweet and the tuna provided the needed kick of flavor. The crust was thin and flaky yet fresh and flavorful. The tasty and crunchy crust was a delight inside my mouth. The pizza was light yet filling. Chivs recommendation is indeed a winner!

I learned that the pizza dough at Mamma Maria's Pizzeria is made on the spot. I caught the pizza dough maker at work and asked for some snapshots and he gladly obliged.

The place is spacious as it's a food court and Mamma Maria's Pizzeria share it with other tenants such as Siomai sa Tisa and a specialty store. The interior isn't air-conditioned but is airy enough to provide good ventilation to diners.

I don't have much to say about the two pasta we ate except that I liked the carbonara better than the meatball spaghetti. The meatballs were too bland for my taste. Perhaps the fact that the pasta arrived late (more than 30 minutes and we almost canceled our order) made me lose my appetite for it.

Prices at Mamma Maria's Pizzeria are quite affordable. Pizza starts at P80 and pasta, P49 for the medium size. Allot P200 per head or less and you're bound to get a delightful snack or lunch. And if you happen to visit while their free drinks promo is up (just like when we did), you might just be able to save some bucks.

If only for the pizza, which I think is yummy, I'll go back to Mamma Mia's Pizzeria when I get back to Cebu this year. I plan to try the other pizza varieties that have quirky names such as Fantastico, Romeo and Tropicana.
