Revisiting Italiannis, the Place to Be for Fresh Italian Food

Italianni’s is not my kind of restaurant because I cannot always pay a lot for my food. I love Italian food, though. I like it that Italliani’s serves fresh Italian food, the very reason why the resto will stick in your mind once you get to taste their offerings. You bet, I only get to eat at Italianni’s whenever there’s a special occasion or when I have some gift certificates to use. And speaking of gift certificates, my brother won a P500 gift certificate from a Nuffnang event we attended last year and which my sister and I have used recently. I can say that our recent Italianni’s experience has been as enjoyable as my first time.

resto interiors

The branch we went to is the one at Robinsons Place-Ermita. It’s just a few steps away from the Pedro Gil entrance. I saw the promo (image below) and ordered one for each of us. Nyam ate the Spaghetti something and mine was the Seafood Linguini.

We were given complimentary bread (focaccia and bagel) with balsamic and olive oil as dip. I love the bread at Italliani’s. They’re always smooth and soft and fresh. We asked for a second serving.

The drinks arrived first before the pasta. Mine was a frapuccino while my sister had a chocolate latte. The pasta came next. You’ll never get wrong ordering pastas at Italianni’s. They’re all delish and oozing with Italian flavors. That must be the reason why Italianni’s still here despite the mushrooming of Italian restos all over the metro.

I had a seafood linguini while my sister had a spaghetti with ham and bacon.

Aside from the pasta combo, I also ordered Frito Misto (a platter of shrimps, zucchini fritters and fish fillets with dips) which was crunchy and delicious.

The total bill was P853.80 but since I had a gift cert, I paid less.

The service at Italianni’s when we dined there was impeccable. I remember it was the manager who talked to me the whole time since it was early (around 10:30 a.m.) and there weren’t many diners yet. She was nice enough to make us feel comfortable sitting in our couch at one corner of the resto. She would approach us from time to time to ask if everything was okay. How thoughtful.

They say that a restroom is a good indicator of a resto’s commitment to quality. The Italianni’s at Robinsons Place- Ermita has a spotless restroom. We left the resto at around 12:00 p.m. with a lot of diners occupying most of the tables already. I paid a visit to the restroom and these were what I saw:

As you can see, the restroom was clean and orderly despite the then increasing volume of people. Now that says a lot about Italianni’s eye for sanitation and hygiene.

We left the place stuffed. It didn’t prevent us though from eating desserts at Dairy Queen, but that’s another post.

Grazie (grat-si)! That was how the crew at Italianni’s bid us goodbye. Very friendly, ayt?
Hmmm, okay, so maybe, just maybe, Italianni’s can be my kind of restaurant, too.

Jollibee's Black Forest Sundae

A visit to Jollibee-SM Manila last weekend introduced me to the fast food's newest frozen dessert creation, the sinful Black Forest Sundae. I once fell in love with Jollibee's Rocky Road Brownie Sundae (soft-serve ice cream with bits of peanuts and brownie chunks) before despite its intense sweetness. Now, my eyes are on Black Forest Sundae.

frozen desserts from Jollibee

Basically, it's soft-serve ice cream with chocolate bits, brownie chunks and canned cherry slices. Definitely, it's a sweet treat for people with a sweet tooth. At P36 a serving, enjoy it as a take-out dessert or as plain snack. Or better yet, as a cheap way to cap off an equally cheap Jollibee meal.

I love the fact that I can get this frozen dessert anytime from ubiquitous Jollibee. Black Forest Sundae is a dessert that's not only sinful and affordable but accessible as well.

Restaurant Review: A Veneto Pizzeria Ristorante is Casual Dining at Its Best

It was a high school friend who introduced me to this Italian restaurant started by a Filipino family in the States and was later moved here in Manila. The name is very Italian but the menu and the service combine American and Italian styles. I am talking about A Veneto Pizzeria Ristorante that has branches in Timog, Glorietta, Las Piñas and recently, Mall of Asia.

The restaurant has been one of my favorites (after my third visit) because here, the food is very good and the prices very reasonable. The comprehensive menu boasts of American and Italian goodness. They have various kinds of pasta in three different sauces (white, red and pesto), appetizers, sandwiches, pizza, salad, calzones and heros. They also have a couple of desserts, with blueberry cheesecake as my best choice.

feast at A Veneto

I’d like to rave about the resto’s Carbonara with Chicken (P230) and their New York Pizza (P280-medium). The serving of the pasta is generous, good for two or more people. Imagine crunchy chicken strips, ham, bacon, mushroom, herbs, cream and cheese come together to form a delectable sauce poured over a big plate of linguini. It was love at first bite for me. It has been a regular part of my order ever since. I love the fact that the pasta tastes better the more you eat it. It’s like the umami’s always there and your appetite is sustained all throughout. If I don’t watch my calorie intake, I think I can finish a serving of it. It’s that good. (I even tried to replicate it during our New Year’s Eve party. Some of my friends agreed I got it right, but I thought I failed by an inch.) But I digress.

carbonara with chicken, yummy and super sulit

The New York Pizza, on the other hand, is a thick-crust pizza with toppings of ham, pepperoni, beef, onions and bell peppers. I love how the onions and peppers add spice to the already flavored meats. My mouth got excited after the first bite. Finishing a slice of two of this pizza is never a problem. Actually, the problem only starts when you get full from eating the first batch of what you ordered and there’s no room left for the pizza, which is usually served last together with desserts, if any. I have thought of a technique, though. I now ask the waiter to serve our orders all at the same time. (Of course, the drinks can arrive first.) This way, we can enjoy everything without worrying getting too full.

New york pizza, deliciously addicting

You’ll also never get wrong with their Seafood Parmigiana and Eggplant Parmigiana. Both pastas are delights in their own right. The former is linguini in red sauce laden with peeled mussels and shrimps and fish chunks. I guess it’s baked because it is served with cheese melting on top of the pasta. This is my ultimate choice for red sauce pasta. The latter is linguini in white sauce served with crunchy eggplant fritters. It’s a friend’s favorite dish because she’s a vegetarian. Once I tried this pasta and found that the eggplant tasted like meat, I had a hard time believing it was made of eggplant.

glorious food

I have yet to try their calzones and heros but based on what I read from the menu, they are interesting, too.

The ambiance at A Veneto is both comforting and engaging. The interiors are neat, with some contemporary artworks on the walls. The restroom is clean, but the rate of cleanliness changes depending on the volume of people.

The service is okay. They would refill your bottomless drinks without asking them. If the resto’s full of patrons, which I think is 70% of the time, you may find some difficulty getting their attention. They welcome you at the door and thank you when you leave, consistently.

A Veneto is the perfect place for a meet-up with friends or a romantic date. Whenever I dine at A Veneto, I am either with siblings and friends or a date with my beau. And I always enjoy each visit.

I suggest you allot P300 per head. Order the A Veneto Platter (P250) for appetizer. It’s very practical since it has a little bit of everything (chicken wings, potato balls, crab sticks and fries). You may get a pasta or two, depending on how many you are in the group. Get a pizza and a dessert, too to complete the dining experience. Get glasses of bottomless lemonade for drinks to wash down all the greasy stuff you will devour.

A Veneto, for me, is casual dining at its best. Here, you’ll get good Italian food and find value for your hard-earned money at the same time. Now, if that isn’t enough to convince you to try the restaurant, then I don’t know what will.

Dairy Queen is My Ultimate Ice Cream Parlor | Dairy Queen’s Story of Sweet Success

Yes, it’s true. That’s mainly because I so love their signature blizzard and shakes. Whenever I’d go to Robinsons Place-Ermita, SM Megamall and Gateway Mall, I’d always find time to visit Dairy Queen (DQ) for a brownie temptation (blizzard) or a strawberry shake.

more blizzards

The last time I visited Dairy Queen with my sister (right after our lunch at Italianni’s), I saw some brochures sitting by the counter narrating the humble beginnings of the store, which goes exactly like this:

A Story of Sweet Success (History of Dairy Queen)

Our phenomenal story began with a 10 cent of a then unnamed ice cream on August 4, 1938 in Kankakee, Illinois. A father and son team had been experimenting with a frozen dessert for sometime. With the help of a good friend Sherb Noble, they were able to hole an “All You Can Eat Sale” in Noble’s walk-in store to introduce the new product. More than 1,600 servings of the new dessert within two hours, and Dairy Queen was born.

In January 1998, International Dairy Queen, Inc. and it’s subsidiary companies were purchased by legendary investor Warren Buffet.

Dairy Queen introduced new products, year after year, satisfying ice cream cravings the world over. There’s the Dilly Bar, one of the world’s most favorite ready-to-eat frozen treats, frozen cakes and the all-time DQ favorite, Blizzard “served upside down” appeal truly captures everyone’s ice cream dreams and whims. Aside from ice cream, Dairy Queen offers a myriad of cool drinks such as premium fruit smoothies and citrus coolers. Also a favorite among coffee lovers is the Moolatte, a blend of Dairy Queen soft serve and coffee.

Today, Dairy Queen is the World’s No. 1 Ice Cream chain with 6,000 stores. In the Philippines, Dairy Queen opened in 2006 and is owned and operated by the Araneta Group, the same franchise owners of Taco bell and Pizza Hut.
Amazing success story, isn’t it? I wonder though why Dairy Queen hasn’t opened a store in Mall of Asia (MOA), where there is a more diverse and bigger crowd which translates to bigger profit. Twice I asked the guards at MOA for directions to the nearest Dairy Queen store but they told me there is none yet. Will we be seeing one soon? I’m just as clueless as you are. Any plans, Araneta Group?

Worry about the calories later, this is what I always tell myself whenever I get my frozen dessert fix from Dairy Queen. Can you blame me if my mouth water just by looking at the frozen desserts poster of Dairy Queen?

Spaghetti with a Twist | White Sauce Pasta Recipe

Another experiment in the kitchen and I was able to come up with a huge bowl of spaghetti with a twist! Just like our Pinoy spaghetti, it has hotdogs but with only a few hints of sweetness. I used cream and fresh tomatoes for the sauce. I added chili powder to the dish for some spice and used queso de bola (left over from Christmas) as seasoning and toppings. It was a hit with my siblings, as always. Get the recipe to my rich and creamy spaghetti after the jump...

Ingredients:

200g cooked Del Monte Spaghetti
100 ml. Nestle All-Purpose Cream
1/4 cup minced garlic
1/2 cup sliced tomatoes
1 small red bell pepper, minced
1/2 cup water
250g hotdog, sliced
1 small can of corned beef
1/2 cup bechamel (butter, flour and water combination)
1 egg
oil
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1.In a pan, heat oil and add the garlic. As the garlic starts turning golden brown, add the sliced tomatoes and the minced red bell pepper.
2.Add the bechamel, hotdogs and corned beef.Simmer for five minutes.
3.Add the cream and the chili powder.
4.Add salt and pepper to taste. Also add some queso de bola for more flavor.
5.Turn off the heat and add the egg while stirring constantly (to prevent the egg whites from forming).
6. Pour over the sauce to the bowl of cooked pasta. Top with queso de bola.

The recipe serves four to six people. :)

Cofler Milk Chocolate From Arcor, the Maker of Samba

My brother has just come home from school. He brought us chocolate bars with almonds. I wasn't familiar with the brand so I investigated and found out that it was Cofler. The chocolate product comes from Arcor (a Brazilian chocolate company), the one that makes Samba, those chocolate-coated wafer balls that are a cheaper version of Ferrero Rocher. For P24, I think Cofler chocolate bar is cheap. The packaging isn't very attractive but the overall taste of the product makes up for it.

Just like other imported chocolates, I can sense that Cofler is made of quality cocoa beans. It's milk chcoolate so you can taste the richness of milk in between the strong chocolate flavors. The almonds are generous but my only complaint is that the almonds aren't that crunchy. If Arcor could improve on the almonds of Cofler chocolate bars, I'll be very happy.

Cofler is available at leading supermarkets and convenience stores in Metro Manila. :)
