Enjoy a Cowboy's Feast at Texas Roadhouse Grill

Want a taste of the wild, wild West and eat as the cowboys do? Then head on to Texas Roadhouse Grill, one of the more trendy restaurants in the hip El Pueblo in Ortigas. I promise you it's gonna be a gastronomic ride.

Just the other night, I got the chance to sample the offerings of the restaurant through a bloggers event organized by Team Yehey. I arrived at the venue tad late but the program hadn't started yet. Good for me. My blogger friends Monique, Mee-I and Abbie were already there and were kind enough to reserve me a seat. We chatted for a while over nachos, unshelled roasted peanuts and ice-cold glasses of lemonade. Soon we were seen partaking of the restaurant's specialties that came straight from the Texas Roadhouse kitchen.

First we were served a bowl of corn soup each. It had generous servings of ham and corn. It also had crushed tortilla that gave texture to the soup. I liked it. I thought it was way better than the creamy chicken and corn soup at Shakey's.

Photobucket

Next were the appetizers that came in a big platter. It consisted of chicken tenders, buffalo chicken wings and mozzarella cheese sticks with three dips (salsa, sour cream and cheesy mustard). Among them, the mozzarella cheese sticks were the winner. It was my first time to bite into a real mozzarella cheese stick and it made a lasting impression in my head. I'm used to homemade cheese sticks made from cheddar cheese. Haha.

The highlight of the dinner was the Black Angus Ribeye Steak done medium-well. It was tender, juicy and flavorful. It also had its share of the famed "marbled fat." The steak came with a big scoop of mashed potato and buttered veggies. The mashed potato tasted like fresh potatoes and not the one in powdered form that you find in other restaurants. The half-cooked vegetables, on the other hand, were crispy and juicy. I learned from the menu that the steak meal served to us costs P1,100. But worry not, the serving is good for two hungry people.

There were condiments on the table to go with the steak such as Tabasco, Lea & Perrins worscestershire sauce and A.1. steak sauce. The steak sauce had a strong flavor that upon trying it, I found out it overpowered the steak. But then, to each his own.

Photobucket

The Shrimp and Salmon Skewers that came after the steak was not one to be left out on that night's feast. It was served in a big plate with matching flavored rice and buttered veggies. The shrimp was ordinary but the salmon had a sweet and fresh taste.

We capped off the dinner with the dessert called Mighty Oreo Mud Pie. The menu describes it as "layers of rich coffee and chocolate ice cream with Snickers candy pieces atop a crushed Oreo cookie and drizzled with chocolate sauce. " (It reminded me of the decadent dessert I had at Casa Verde in Cebu that had almost the same ingredients and appearance. ) It made everyone in the room gasped with delight. It was sinful, so to speak.

Photobucket

The ambiance at Texas Roadhouse Grill range from laid-back to groovy and festive. The restaurant's interiors were spacious, with lots of framed photos on the walls depicting the life of cowboys in the Wild West. It opens at 11:00 am to 12:00 m.n. from Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The good thing about the restaurant is that it has separate rooms for smokers and non-smokers. Also, aside from steaks and grilled specialties, they serve pasta and rice meals so there's always something for everyone. Allot P400 per head.

Texas Roadhouse Grill currently has two branches. The other one that opened in 2007 is in the Fort, Taguig.

Many thanks to Texas Roadhouse Grill-El Pueblo and Team Yehey for this awesome opportunity to know your restaurant better and enjoy a cowboy's feast for free. :)

How to Best Enjoy Your Fruit Magic

Fruit Magic is one of the trendy juice stands that we see inside the mall. With over 50 branches in Metro Manila and Cebu, it serves fresh, gourmet juices, shakes and smoothies at reasonable prices. Their tag line, "the fastest way to a healthy lifestyle," sounds cliche, but wait till you sample their fruit concoctions. My favorite is the Banana Yogurt smoothie, and here's how you can best enjoy it:

1. Open the cup and see what's inside. I like my smoothie sweet and cold. The combination of banana and yogurt is heaven to my taste. Looking at their naked goodness makes my day.

Photobucket

2. Sip slowly. I want to play with the flavors inside my mouth. You can only do this if you will sip the drink slowly. Try it and experience the magic.

Photobucket

3. Finish it in one sitting. This means you shouldn't take it anywhere other than the table. You are trying to best enjoy the smoothie, remember. Unless of course you're on the go and have to bring the drink with you.

Fruit Magic Branches can be found right here. If you wanna know more about Fruit Magic, visit their website at http://www.fruitmagic.com.ph.

Amazing Cones: Your Pizza in a Cone

I see the store everyday on my way to work. It's relatively new in our area but I noticed it gets a lot of customers every Thursday when devotees flock to St. Jude Shrine to do their novenas. One afternoon, I checked out the store with Edwin and got introduced to yummy pizzas in cones!

Amazing Cones has a different yet unique take on the well-loved Italian fare. Instead of serving round pizza or individual pizza slices, they serve their pizza in a cone. They have this oddly-shaped oven with cone holders where the pizza is cooked within minutes.

Photobucket

The pizza comes in quirky names that the mere reading of them can render you salivating. When we ordered, I got Everything but the Sink and Edwin had the Supremo Italiano. Both belong to the Pizza Cones Special (original size) that are priced at P75. We availed of the current promo and got free glass of iced tea each.

Photobucket

Supremo Italiano has pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, onions, tomato sauce and mozzarella while Everything but the Sink literally has every topping on the list: pepperoni, Italian sausage, beef, mushrooms, pineapple, bell pepper, onions, olives, tomato sauce and mozzarella.

Photobucket

Our amazing cones were both yummy and tasted like real pizza. The mozzarella was queen, standing proudly atop the pizza cone. One thing I liked about the pizza cone was that I tasted the toppings from first to last bite, which meant they were evenly spread inside the cone.

Photobucket

The amazing cones we had were delicious and flavorful, no question about that. My only complaint was the size of the cone. I felt robbed of my money after eating. They were too small for me I didn't even get partially full. I wonder if we ordered the minis priced at P25 instead. I bet it could have been worst. It was just a snack alright but, it could have been more filling. Calling the Amazing Cones owners, I hope you could find a way to make your pizza cones bigger soon.

amazingly delicious, but too small for me

Buffet Alert: Sumptuous and Affordable Buffet at Joven's Grill and Restaurant, Park Mall Cebu

The day before we left Cebu in August, we had a lunch buffet at Joven's Grill and Restaurant situated at the chic Park Mall. The original Joven's Grill and Restaurant is located somewhere in Fuente Osmeña, if I'm not mistaken. For only P265, guests are treated to a wide selection of Filipino, Japanese and Chinese specialties.

Photobucket

Not much into Japanese food (unless it's from Sugi), I lined up to the spread of Filipino and Chinese dishes. When I got my plate-ful of food, I hurried back to our table and started eating. In between bites, I could say that the buffet at Joven's Grill and Restaurant was sumptuous and affordable. I especially liked their Chinese specialties that came in small bowls that were placed inside wooden baskets and steamed individually. Their desserts were delicious, too.

Buffet Prices at Joven's Grill and Restaurant, Park Mall Cebu:

Eat-All-You-Can Lunch or Dinner is P265.
(11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for lunch and 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for dinner)

Eat-All You-Can Merienda is P75.
(3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Below are some snapshots of what we had for lunch:

Compared to the ambiance of its first branch, Joven's at Park Mall has a modern look. The chairs speak of comfort, they even have cushioned seats at one corner. They also have tables outside for those who want to dine al fresco.

The Famous Aligue Bibimbap (Talangkanin Meal) at Kaya Restaurant

Superfriend bought her own digicam recently at Rockwell Powerplant Mall in Makati and treated us (those who accompanied her to the gadgets store!) to Kaya Restaurant for dinner. This Korean dining place is one among the row of restaurants at the mall's concourse level. Upon hearing the name of the restaurant, I immediately thought about the aligue bibimbap (talangkanin meal) that got a lot of buzz a few months ago through Angel Locsin, Diether Ocampo and Sam Milby's hit telenovela "Only You." I ordered it hastily.

Photobucket

The popular talangkanin comes in a big white bowl. Priced at P220, it's already good for two people with average appetite. But knowing myself who can be a voracious eater at times, I had a feeling I could finish it in one sitting. And I did.

Photobucket

Talangkanin is not your ordinary rice toppings. For one, it does not use plain rice alone but a rice flavored with aligue (crab's fat). How rich and tasty could that be? I fell in love with my talangkanin bowl after first bite. It had just the right spice, saltiness and sweetness. It also had the umami taste that we look for in food.

Photobucket
The generous toppings which consist of stir-fried shrimps, squid, carrot strips, mongo sprouts (togue), auricularia (taingang daga) mushrooms, steamed spinach, and a bright sunny side-up egg all work to provide a heavy but delicious finish to the dish. If it's your first time to have a talangkanin for lunch or dinner, make sure you come to the restaurant not on a full stomach so you'll get to appreciate the meal better. Remember, talangkanin is a meal that's big in servings and even bigger in flavors so make sure to prepare yourself.

Photobucket
Aside from Talangkanin, Kaya Restaurant at Rockwell serves Dwelji Kalbi (grilled spicy pork ribs), Kalbi Jim (Korean beef rib stew) and a lot of other noodle soups and grilled specialties.

Kaya Restaurant is a good venue for a meet-up with friends. It has nice interiors and the service is faster and more friendly than other Korean restaurants I know.

FOOD Magazine September 2009 Issue Features La Cocina de Tita Moning

The September 2009 issue of FOOD magazine is quite interesting. Why? Because it features three foreign yet familiar cuisines that have influenced Filipino cooking through the years: Italian, French and Spanish. Add to that the fact that the restaurant where I work part-time, La Cocina de Tita Moning, graces the magazine for a take on Spanish cooking through an article written by Lori Baltazar of DessertComesFirst.com herself.

Photobucket

Get to know our restaurant's specialties such as the Gambas al Ajillo, Fabada Asturiana and Cocido. You can even replicate them at home as our boss shared the recipes with FOOD. These can be found at the Cook's Nook section of the mag.

Speaking of the Cook's Nook section, one ineteresting recipe there piqued my curiosity. It's called eggplant parmigiana, an Italian specialty. I have tried this exact dish before in one of the events I attended and I remember enjoying it so much. Serendipity or not, I have a feeling I can make my own eggplant parmigiana one of these days.

Please grab a copy of FOOD Magazine September 2009 issue if you have time.

Sample the Best of Cavite Cuisine (and History) at Republic of Cavite

The food tasting event for bloggers held at Republic of Cavite last Saturday afternoon was an experience rich in history and gastronomic pleasures. You really can't go wrong with a restaurant that celebrates Cavite cuisine and history in a modern yet homey setting.

Photobucket

Below are the dishes I sampled from the buffet and my foodie notes about them:

Photobucket

Ginataang Tulingan. I'm a big fan of the fish tulingan especially when it's cooked in gata (coconut cream). This dish was so rich I almost choked on the bones because I accidentally ate it together with the flesh of the fish. Poor me. It reminded me of my mom's home-cooking that never fails.

Photobucket

Chicken Magnifique. This tasted like cordon bleau minus the cheese and the bacon. It also had a creamy sauce. I found the chicken skin and fat here too much, though. For those who are watching their cholesterol intake, this should be eaten in moderation.

Photobucket

Fish and Tofu. I think this is the healthiest from the batch. I like the simplicity and lightness of this dish. If you're on a diet, this is a good choice.

Photobucket

Pastel de Lengua. This ox tongue dish is rich and creamy. The flavors are pleasing to the mouth. It tasted fresh, without any hint of "anggo" if you know what I mean by that. I would've paired it with steamed, plain rice but the only ones available that time were Thai rice and basil rice. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. I liked it that the lengua was sliced into bite size pieces. I believe that the smaller the food, the better to chew and appreciate it.

Photobucket

Adobo Caviteño
. Not your ordinary adobo as it's very rich and tasty. I loved the inclusion of quail eggs in this dish as it made the adobo looked more palatable.

Photobucket

Kinulot na Page. This was a bit salty for my taste but I ended up finishing three spoonfuls. The page (stingray) was so fresh and made tastier by the gata (coconut cream). I paired it with the basil rice to neutralize the saltiness and it was a perfect combination!

Maja Blanca. I've no photo of it but what I remember is that it was shaped exactly like a fancy puto. It was not in a bilao which is how it's normally served. It had the same great taste of the native rice cake.

Photobucket

Lihim ni Lola. This reminds me of puto bumbong. As the name suggests, it has a delicious secret. You may see the "secret" here but to taste it, you'll have to go all the way to Republic of Cavite in Trece Martirez City.

Photobucket

Just go figure what's inside this yummy rice cake. Here's an assurance that you'll never regret going to Cavite to try this: 'twas so good I ate five pieces in one sitting! Sssshhh.

Photobucket

Onde Onde. This puto rolled in a bed of dessicated cocounut was chewy and I was surprised to know that it has a sweet sauce inside that tasted like panucha. A very sweet surprise, indeed.

Photobucket

Fancy Puto. This is not your typical puto. It has slices of salted egg and cheese on top and small pieces of savory meat inside that tasted like the asado found in a siopao.

The dishes we tasted were accompanied by glasses and glasses of ginger iced tea. There was no better drink for that afternoon's buffet than it. It was refreshing and healthy. Edwin and I enjoyed it so much.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Before we left, Republic of Cavite granted us a sip of their freshly-brewed Amadeo coffee. Sorry the photo I have won't justify it because I already added milk in it before taking the shot. All I can say is, the coffee was perfect.
